Running the Meeting - First Things First
At the first meeting of this new book group, after everyone has had a chance to say "Hello" and settle in with their snacks and drinks, there should be a discussion about all the details so everyone will be on the same page. Talk about:
- how often will you meet
- what times will you begin and end your meetings
- what kind of books will you read
- who chooses the titles
- where will you find the books and the discussion questions
- who does the background work each month
- will your meetings be informal and relaxed or follow Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief
- what refreshments will be served
- how much time will each member be allowed to speak
- where will you have your next meeting
- how will you contact each member
- develop a few ground rules so everyone will know what is expected of the members. Just don't take for granted that everyone will know. This is always a good idea even if you have a relaxed, informal book group.
TIP: Think about your group dynamics. Every member has their own personality, some are more extroverted while others are by nature very shy and introverted. To increase the chances that every member of the book club will enjoy the experience, you might discuss how much time people will be allowed to speak so everyone will be given the chance to say something, even if they decline at a certain point.)
